The Step Up Youth Program offers Vancouver Island youth aged 15–18 an engaging and meaningful volunteer experience in their local Island Health facilities. Volunteers develop key life skills—such as communication, teamwork, time management, and personal responsibility—while practicing Island Health’s C.A.R.E. values: Courage, Aspire, Respect, and Empathy.
Youth in the program gain practical exposure to a healthcare environment and have the opportunity to explore a variety of health careers. Monthly online guest speakers provide insight into professions such as medicine, nursing, medical imaging, pharmacy, psychiatry, social work, and more. You can hear directly from current volunteers in our promotional video. Financial Support & Scholarships To ensure equitable access, Island Health offers bursary funding to reduce barriers related to transportation, food, and uniform costs. The program is also affiliated with the Altruition Scholarship Program, allowing eligible volunteers to earn $20 in scholarship credit for every hour volunteered. Application Information More information—including the application link—can be found on our website: https://www.islandhealth.ca/learn-about-health/volunteer-resources-engagement/step-youth-program Applications are open now and will be accepted until Friday, May 15th.
