The Homebuilders Association Vancouver (HAVAN) will be hosting a Virtual Construction Career Expo10/13/2022
Home construction in BC is thriving yet women currently represent just 5.7% of the labour force. Faced with a critical housing shortage, and the federal government prioritizing diversity and inclusion with a focus on hiring women, underrepresented groups, and visible minorities, the industry is changing fast. There’s never been a better time for young women to start a career in residential construction.
The Homebuilders Association Vancouver (HAVAN) will be hosting a Virtual Construction Career Expo on Tuesday, November 1, 11am – 7pm, with the platform remaining open through Saturday, November 5 with the option to continue to view booth information/offerings, and book online info sessions. The LIVE day will feature panel discussions from 4pm – 7pm, featuring women currently working in the industry. Six young women are leading the charge - sharing their journeys and successes, salaries, debunking myths around dirty jobs, and undesirable work environments, providing a unique look into the day and life of an electrician, heavy machine operator, project manager, carpenter/foreman, and energy advisor. The women will also be available at the Career Expo on November 1 to interact via live panel discussions. Attached is a PDF that we hope you will share with your students, (open to all – we are just electing to focus on young women, given their under-representation in the industry), parents and co-workers. Check out the young women, and resources at www.havan.ca/Letsbuildacareer Based in the UVic Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), HighTechU is a community for high school and undergrad students to make connections, build professional skills and explore diverse career pathways in Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering.
