University Updates - COVID - 19
University of Victoria - March 31st.Hello Island Counsellors, I hope you are all safe and healthy. With the return to work (virtually for most), I am sure that you and your students have questions regarding applications, self-reporting and admission decisions. Please know I am available to chat with you and your students throughout this time. I will be working from home for the foreseeable future, so email will be the easiest form of communication though I can book phone or Skype appointments as well. Our office has created a COVID-19 specific website for applicants and admitted students. Please review the website and feel free to share the URL with your students. If you have additional questions you would like to see addressed on this website, please forward them to me and I will ask the Communications team to work on getting answers. The website will continually be updated, so please bookmark the page and continue to use it as a reference. A few additional updates: - Our office has cancelled some upcoming events including Destination UVic (May 23) and Discover UVic International (May 12). For any upcoming individual school visits, I will connect with each counsellor to cancel our visit. - Our office will be running registration webinars in May. More details to come. - PSBC planning will resume as usual and you will be hearing from me in the coming days about your school’s visit. The PSBC team knows that you may not be able to confirm visits as quickly and as easily as you have in the past, but we would like to move forward with planning in the event that we are fortunate enough to have our schools open and running in the fall. Over the last few days, I have been hearing from Island students who planned on attending school outside of Vancouver Island. Due to the current situation, some students are considering staying closer to home for the Fall. If you have any students who are wanting to submit an application for UVic, please know that several programs still have open applications. Since these new applicants will not be able to self-report their grades, they will not receive a decision until mid-May when our Admissions Office receives the Ministry download of grades. It is crucial that these new applicants request their Ministry transcript through the Student Transcript Service. (This is important for all applicants and a good reminder for your students who have done so already). The following programs are still accepting applications: TRIFAC (HUMANITIES/SOCIAL SCIENCES/SCIENCE) closes 30 April 2020 ENGINGEERING (Year 1) – closes 30 April 2020 COMPUTER SCIENCE – closes 30 April 2020 HEALTH & COMMUNITY SERVICES – closes 15 May 2020 ART HISTORY & VISUAL STUDIES – closes 30 April 2020 I know this is an unprecedented situation and your students may feel overwhelmed with the unknown. Please assure them that I am available for any and all questions that they may have. This applies to parents and counsellors as well. While Camosun continues to closely monitor the evolving situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the application for the summer and fall 2020 term remains open (online only) and new applications continue to be processed as usual.
Admissions has transitioned services to email, which is the best way to reach us, and voicemail 250-370-3550, option 1 exclusively, to support physical distancing as required by B.C.'s Provincial Health Officer. This could mean a delay in response as staff work to continue supporting applicants. Your patience is appreciated as we navigate through this uncharted territory. The admissions team is working closely with post-secondary institutions, governments and education systems to ensure that applicants are evaluated fairly, flexibly and with compassion. At this time, electronic transcripts are being accepted and should be sent directly from the institution attended, or the Ministry of Education, to: admissions@camosun.bc.ca. Current grade 12 high school studentsThe admissions team will continue to be flexible where possible and adapt to changing circumstances with the aim of removing barriers to completion of the application process. At this time, the process has not changed and provisional admission is still being offered. As every education system is handling this situation differently, it is best for you to speak with your high school about how your final grades will be determined and when official transcripts will be available. Under the circumstances, Camosun will be flexible with deadlines for final grades. Applicants applying from B.C. or Yukon High Schools can apply until May 15 for provisional admission. If you applied to a program that has non-academic requirements, please check the program admissions pages for up-to date information. The deadline remains June 30 for these requirements. If you have any questions about your application or about admission to Camosun, please email admissions@camosun.ca The latest college-related information on COVID-19 and frequently asked questions that are regularly updated are available at camosun.ca/services/admissions/.
